It's been a while since I've read something in the fantasy genre, and I'm not a big fan of supernatural content like magic or psychic powers. However, when I was given the opportunity to join the blog tour for Zara Hoffman's debut novel, I have to admit I was intrigued by both the summary and cover design. Although this novel wasn't a favorite, I did find The Belgrave Daughter to be an entertaining read.

The book is well-written, and it is evident that the author poured so much time and effort into this novel. I was captivated by the vivid descriptions and unique imagery. Fawn and Caleb, as well as the rest of the cast, are intriguing and well-rounded characters, and I think many teen girls can relate to Fawn's personality. One issue I had with the writing technique was some rough changes in POV characters from paragraph to paragraph. These POV jumps sometimes made it difficult to follow the characters' thoughts.

At first, I found it difficult to get into the story world. However, once I got past the first several chapters, I was hooked and couldn't put the book down. (I especially loved some of the references to our modern day culture, like songs from Tangled and Imagine Dragons!)

If you are a teen reader and love the fantasy romance genre, you'll enjoy The Belgrave Daughter. Keep in mind this is best for older teens due to some mature content. Zara proves to be a talented writer and even though this one wasn't a favorite, I'm looking forward to her upcoming novels!

I received an eARC of the book in exchange for my honest review.

The Belgrave Daughter The Belgrave Legacy Zara Hoffman Juan Solorzano 9780989629409 Books Reviews

Zara is an author I recently met on Twitter. She gave me a copy of the eBook for an honest review as a part of her blog tour.

The Septemgeminus Prophecy states "A powerful sorceress with blood laced in gold sevenfold shall determine the fate of the world."

Fawn Belgrave's magical powers are the coveted prize in a bet between God and the Devil.

When she meets Caleb, the dark angel assigned to seduce her, Fawn's life is turned upside down.

In order to do a fair review, I must first be honest and say I am not the target audience for this book. The book is a young adult fantasy romance with witches, angels, and demons about a college age woman. As a mid-thirties father of three and fan of high fantasy and science fiction, this book is not one I would normally pick up and read.

As I've said in the past, my reviews are here to encourage independent authors and to connect them with potential readers. Ms. Hoffman's debut work is worthy of such a review.

I was most impressed with the emotion expressed throughout the novel. Fawn Belgrave experiences a series of ups and downs throughout the book, and the author does a wonderful job of conveying believable emotion throughout the novel. She wrestles with love and lust, trust and betrayal, loneliness, etc. and I could empathize with her feelings and reactions throughout.

Ms. Hoffman often jumps between the thoughts of several different characters throughout the story, and the effect can be jarring at times. In several instances, we read the inner thoughts and feelings of Fawn and then Caleb in the matter of a couple of paragraphs. It can be difficult to follow along, and I would suggest Ms. Hoffman try and maintain a single point of view for each scene in order to help clarify the flow of the story for the reader.

I found Ms. Hoffman's descriptions of magic, heaven, hell, and supernatural beings fascinating. She has created a universe full of intricate rules and details, and I felt she stayed consistent throughout. But, as a new reader to this world (and this genre in general), I found myself wanting more explanation. I would have appreciated a little more time spent building up the world early in the story.

When I started reading The Belgrave Daughter, I was worried I would not be able to finish the book. It is a genre of story that I do not seek out, and it deals with characters and situations that at first do not resonate with a reader like me. That said, as I continued reading, I needed to see where the story would go. I found myself fascinated by the characters, and quickly read through the book's 156 pages.

I commend Ms. Hoffman for finishing an endeavor of this nature at such a young age. I am impressed that she is willing to tackle very difficult subjects, like spirituality, betrayal, forgiveness, love, and even depression. I believe Ms. Hoffman should continue writing, as I am certain she will only improve her craft as she continues.

The Belgrave Daughter is a romantic young adult modern day fantasy. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys these types of stories and is looking for a quick read from a growing young author.
Fawn Belgrave is a seventh generation witch and she is one of the most powerful witches. Her powers come to her at her sixteenth birthday and after that she’s afraid to uses them. There is a prophecy about Fawn where she can save the world, but she doesn’t believe in this. She live her life without using her power, but one day she met Caleb, she doesn’t know who he is but she’s attracted by him. Caleb is Lucifer’s right hand, and he must corrupt Fawn so Lucifer can use her powers for himself.
Fawn has a twin brother; Alec, in the Belgrave family the power goes to the woman but Fawn and Alec are close to each other’s. Her best friend is Ivy, she’s also her roommate and she is a little obsessed with men and sex. Fawn is a good girl, she go to school, never miss, she loves her family and Ivy and she never do a bad thing. She’s afraid of her power since her sixteenth birthday but Caleb is here to changes things.
Caleb is so intense, I like this character, he is well describe and I want to let him hug me and I think it’s the devil side in him that attracted me so much.
I also like Ivy even if I suspected whom was Ivy, it is always good to be right and to like what the author proposes us.
Lucifer and God himself are so amazing, they are so powerful but they play games like kids with the life of others people and I really think they can do that. It could be the real life.
The dialog between Fawn and Caleb are fun and I like the way they interacted together. Some people would say that Fawn is a naïve girl and yes but she’s also strong when she has self-confidence. This happens when she is with Caleb because he makes her trust herself and on the other side, Fawn allows him to find a little his lost humanity.
Even if I don’t like the end (not because it’s bad but because after I want to know more and more) it was a surprise because when you lie to somebody, the universe charges it to you very hard.
The story is developed well and I like very much the way Zara describes the characters, that makes them more real.
I was really transported by this story which even if it’s not perfect, it’s a very good discovery. I look forward to being able to read Tears of an Angel because the end is not possible. I can’t stop with this ending, it’s absolutely not possible.
Thanks Zara for giving me the opportunity to read your book.
