Sadly I've come to realize that I'm a bit of messy person. Whether it's my ADD kicking in, or just the speed of life we have way too much stuff in our home. This book was a breath of fresh air as it helped me come to terms with my cluttering ways and solutions to end it once and forever. Thanks for helping to declutter my life and make my wife happier. )
There was really nothing all that profound here. Much of what is here can be found in other books. The author does give some helpful advice on developing strategies for getting rid of the clutter.
What I like about this book is that it doesn't only talk about going through each room in your house and throwing stuff away. It recommends thinking about why your house is cluttered and are you keeping things because you are emotionally attached or dealing with grief. Or is it a matter of being overwhelmed and having a husband and kids who aren't helping. I think if you're constantly dealing with a cluttered house it's helpful to figure out why. Then Jen gives you a variety of strategies on going through your house and organizing and getting rid of the clutter. If clutter is a constant part of your life I think it's important to figure out the "Why" before cleaning up your house one more time.
Ok, maybe my house is not cluttered enough for this book. Maybe the ideas will work for some but I only want go through my stuff once. There is a lot of boxing for another room. Why not just go put it up in the other room. I'm assuming that is because this book was written for people with all their rooms so cluttered that just putting it up is not an option. This book is basically the same old throw in a bunch of boxes marked giveaway, sell, trash, etc. There's no new tricks her. However, if you're place is overrun with clutter and you have no idea where to start it's an ok book to get you started. Although if it's that bad just get going and find some stuff to throw away instead of spending time reading this.
A great book, with lots of tips for not only decluttering your life, but for why you should and why it got that way in the first place. Lots of common sense and lots of stuff we "know," but ignore and don't implement. A book I'll likely keep "on hold" to refer back to, when I falter in my decluttering efforts. I found myself doing a good bit of mental line editing, as I read, but it was worth it for the tips and information. Perhaps, being an editor, I tend to get "stuck" on the editorial issues. For someone who wants a quick course in decluttering and the mental/emotional issues involved, "Unclutter Your Life" is a very good place to start.
Unclutter Your Life has given me a concrete plan to move unnecessary items out of my house without suffering the usual regret. I've been thinking of moving and downsizing, but had feared I would be unable to part with my "treasures." This book has given me ideas on how to proceed with my efforts and has, also, validated much of my own thinking. The author, Jen Williams, gives logical reasons for throwing away items that seemed too precious to do without. She gives concrete examples of keepsakes that should be discarded. However, she suggests ways of preserving memories without keeping a closet full of clothing from our past lives. Every "clutter bug" should read this book.
Have you ever heard the saying that when the woman of the house decides she is going on a diet, the whole house goes on the diet? Well, that's what happened when I read this book. After reading, I declared war on clutter in my house. Not only am I a clutterer, my husband is too (bringing home 10 business cards from the same company planning to give them out to people, but never doing it...writing down phone numbers with no names underneath on scraps of paper that he looks at later and says, "who is this?"...etc) and he now knows that he will be put on a clutter free diet this month. I am inspired and ready to roll! I found this book was helpful in that the author gave me insight into why I clutter and defined clutter. This was truly helpful. I realized our clutter comes from the everpresent sentence, "but I might need it someday..." The author gives a strategy to deal with that. Jen Williams gives detailed action plans, several strategies to choose from and step by step instructions on handling the clutter. Three cheers for a clutter free life!
