Asteroid squatters. A genocidal enemy. Saving lives has just been added to her job description....

Evicting people from their homes is a crappy job, but Elfrida Goto knows that somebody has to do it. If she can't evict the squatters from asteroid 11073 Galapagos, it'll further delay a project she cares deeply about terraforming Venus. Unfortunately, Elfrida's remote telepresence robot isn't cooperating, and neither are the asteroid's inhabitants. When an enemy fleet attacks her home base and heads straight for Galapagos, her mission changes in a hurry.

Teaming up with a wannabe Star Force pilot, Elfrida hits on a plan to save the squatters. If she survives long enough to put it into practice, she'll go up against the most dangerous enemy humanity has ever known....

The Galapagos Incident is the first installment in The Solarian War Saga, a series of suspenseful space operas with a strong comedic edge. If you like fast-paced space thrillers, geeky references, and books that keep you thinking, then you'll love Felix R. Savage's extraordinary look into our interplanetary future.

The Galapagos Incident A Space Colonization Thriller The Solarian War Saga Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Felix R Savage Ryan Kennard Burke Knights Hill Publishing Books

This book being an early one from this author, it has some rough edges, sure, and these did bother me. However it had enough things going for it to keep me reading too. There are some grammar/typo type issues here and there, but these are all super minor things. The biggest issue with it, for me, was simply maybe a lack of a good editor's scrutiny. I think the story could have been trimmed down in some areas to make it tighter and to make it flow better. However, some neat things would also likely have been cut. There are some great concepts and characters in this one but there are also some long scenes that sort of wander, eventually to find their way back on track but it takes a while.

Bottom line: I liked this book enough to want to read the second installment in this series, and beyond. After the last two installments I am super glad I did. The Mercury and Moon books, later on in this series, are really great and much of what happens in those, especially the best characters, come from this one. So I suggest you give it a try, and do not give up on it. Push though to the later books in the series and you will not be disappointed. This is a really fun and exciting series and Mr. Savage really hits his stride later on in this story, I promise.

The Galapagos Incident A Space Colonization Thriller The Solarian War Saga Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Felix R Savage Ryan Kennard Burke Knights Hill Publishing Books Reviews

This book started slow and was at first jumped all around, then as I read further the pieces all began to mesh, there was mystery as to who or what was driving the mission, and then how it was being misdirected. then another force suddenly showed up, throwing more confusion into the plot. as the story continued there were loses and also many hidden functions that were activated to save the people and culture of the inhabitants of the asteroid. I would recommend the reading of this book, with the admonition to read on, it is a bit confusing at first but it sure gets better.
This is the first hard science fiction that I have read by Mr. Savage and I must say it rocked!

I had only previously read his _Interstellar Railroad_ series, which are also very good, but this one took things to a whole other level. The universe Mr. Savage has created is more of an extrapolation from today, which is what I feel defines hard science fiction, and the characters are fleshed-out and I found myself identifying with Goto and even Glory, to a certain extent.

tl;dr If you like hard science fiction, this is a must-read!
The characters are fully developed in this book. It is a excellent blend of unusual events that combine history and contemporary science fiction with the politics of bureaucrats. References to actual events as well as fictional writings show the breadth of knowledge of the writer. It does a great job of exploring decisions made by both individuals and teams and how survival is one of the strongest emotions we have as humans. It sneaks in comments that make you wonder what will happen to Elfrida in the future and how what she doesn't know will impact her career.

I recommend this book without reservation.
I have a rapacious appetite for Sci-fi and Felix Savage delivers! The story is plausible and the technology is nicely extrapolated from current tech. The "future history" again follows a reasonable possibility for the future. The story truly begins in the Prequel "CrapKiller" but this book is standalone. The action is fairly fast paced and intriguing and the ideas and philosophies are well thought out. I really enjoyed reading this book (and now reading further into the series) and I would highly recommend it... about the only fault I can find (if I must) is that sometimes the story breaks from one scene to another are a bit abrupt and you may not immediately catch that the scene has changed/// however, I quickly adjusted and it did not disrupt the story flow by much... I can sometimes be picky... <G>

Get it! Read it! Get the next ones in the series!!
This novel had a lot of interesting concepts. I loved the lag time in telepresence communication. I can just imagine the horrors that would cause in diplomatic discussions and arguments. I also found the interaction between the phavatar and her host very interesting. Other particularly interesting elements splart, immersive environments, generations of people living in asteroids, terraforming, AI issues, and the UN's military/civilian role in things. One of the more intriguing issues revolved around this particular future's type of racism. The novel bursts with imagination.

The pacing lagged at times for me, and at other times seemed to skip over the most interesting parts, but overall I liked the story. And—perhaps uncharacteristically for a sci-fi reader—I liked that there weren't a lot of long space battles. The ending felt rushed and then drawn out, but endings are so very, very subjective, and I don't think they all need to fit into the Hollywood cookie cutter format.

I found it confusing in places unclear motivations, underexplained political twists, hard-to-visualize mechanics of the spaces ships, a few characters I couldn't keep straight, etc. For example, I liked that there was different gravity on different parts of the ship because of various spinning speeds and things (I'm no physicist), but I found it really hard to picture.

Now…the vocabulary. I have a pretty good vocabulary, but I had to look up a lot of words (thank goodness I was reading on my ). I think the author was trying to show how speech had evolved over the years, resurrecting old or obscure words as languages do. But…the effect bordered on just plain pretentious. Many of the made-up science fiction words were cool, however, and totally understandable in context.

There were really funny bits—but subtly funny—and I love that in a novel.

I would consider continuing this series or other work by Felix R. Savage.

Warning profanity and sexual references
