The story of Marguerite Gertrude Zelle (Mara-Hari) from fictional letters read as a history prior to and during World War I women's fight for equality. I enjoyed this novel and the the primary participants. It is on the same level as "The 19th Wife."
I have read most all of Coelho's books and they are all different. This novel was a good intro only to the story of Mata Hari; I did order the book Fem Fatale he recommended and found that read to answer more questions as well as giving historical details of the times in the Dutch East Indies.
I was really looking forward to reading this book. I love Paulo Coelho's other books, however this one disappointed me. I felt the book skipped around and was hard to follow. There were stories that were introduced but never revisited. It may be better for the reader that already knows some of the history of the women.
Couldn't put it down! Coelho's detailed biography is quite different from anything he's written. There's no mysticism, but there's an intense storyline. Flashbacks and fast forwards keep the reader wondering what'll come next. A must read for anyone who loves history.
This book is about a self-serving, selfish, self-centered narcissist who , based on this book , does not have a worthy place in history. My question is what has this book contributed to the world body of literature? I think I have wasted time and money to buy and read this book. Perhaps the author had a personal mission to write about this woman but must say am very disappointed with this pretty pointless book.Am I missing some valiant effort to elevate this character to a level she does not deserve based on the facts here? I was very disappointed in this book.

I've heard about Mata Hari all my life. Who isn't familiar with the exotic image of the female spy? Actually, not too many are familiar with the story behind the myth. This was an enjoyable read, and a good lesson in the history. Beyond that I loved the way that Coelho was able to express the intelligence and the emotions of this fascinating woman from a woman's point of view.
