This is your typical Forgotten Realms story with all of the flair: magic, vampires, dire wolves, zombies, magicians, with a mix of humans who seem to have some abilities as well. The story unfolds with the two protagonists, Liam and Ryder, two brothers from a small farming town held by a seemingly corrupt baron named Purdun. Liam and Ryder are part of a rebellious group called the Crimson Awl who fights against heavy taxation and the baron. That's really about it. There's no other depth to the Crimson Awl, but I digress.

Ryder becomes quickly captured, though Liam believes him dead, and Liam is left to try to lead the Crimson Awl, deal with the guilt of his parents and Ryder's grieving widow. What unfolds, however, quickly results in some role reversals, betrayal, outright stupidity, and the outlying force of vampires invading and causing a ruckus.

The true problem of the story becomes apparent with the rise of a powerful vampire mistress named Shyressa who is hungry for not only blood, but power. That seemingly corrupt baron is the only thing stopping her from dominating the part of the world where all of these characters reside. And so, transitions occur.

The story is written loosely, but well, and it's an easy, quick read. However, the depth of the characters and the difference of opinions and feelings that arise seems uncannily quick (the entire span of the novel is just a few months). Hard formed alliances that have lasted years change and feelings of love and compassion are shattered rather quickly replaced by new loves and compassion and loyalty. It makes me think I'm reading a story about a bunch of hot-headed dolts. The only characters that make sense for changing allegiance so quickly are the vampires, considering they don't have a choice in the matter once bitten.

However, I am not above giving credit where credit is due. It's a good story, one that leaves you at a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter, and the book itself. Good is just about all I can say. It doesn't stand out and it doesn't completely want me to give up on reading either. It's just slightly flat where more depth could be added. The story can be read in a few days and if you're anything like me you'll feel fairly neutral about the whole thing.

Master of Chains The Fighters Jess Lebow 9780786938001 Books Reviews

OMG...this was horrible. Nevermind the premise that a couple of brothers with NO training become weapon masters overnight. Especially the chains dude - picks them up, kicks ass.... Right.

Then, we can stop thinking about physics at all. Yup - wrap a chain around a statue's base and it will tip over????? Or chain a stone giant's leg and pull???? That didn't work, but when a stone hit the chain, the giant fell, not the human? Though lesser mass lost????

I could go on, but it would be pointless. I think this is the first book in the forgotten realms series that I will not bother to keep on the shelf.
You gotta love a book called "Master of Chains" which deprives you of anything even remotely resembling a Master of Chains until the last 50 pages of text. Oh wait... no you don't. Lebow destroys the nice tapestries he managed to weave with decent dramatic prose by tripping through the worst action writing I've ever seen.

As with most of the D&D novels the editor assigned to this book is completely incompetent and has no business working in professional publishing.
This book is definitely an Excellent start to the series. Looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.
This book was a great quick read. I really enjoyed how quickly things escalate and they definitely cover a lot of ground for only one book. The book ends on a cliffhanger and I hope they put out a follow up eventually.
The main character become a chain weilding master with little or no training.
Started out ok, group ambushes what they think is an easy mark, but it turns out they were ambushed themselves. Main character is believed slain but really wasn't, and his family carries on.

However, from there it goes downhill. Driven only by revenge the hero returns and he's invulnerable. The ending felt really rushed -- as if the author was under the gun to complete the novel by noon the next day (and he's writing at 11pm the night before).

Don't get me wrong, D&D / Forgotten Realms aren't meant to be literary classics. It's a fun read with lots of action and fights. But like everything else, too much isn't good.
"Master of Chains" is a story of love, betrayal and conflicting loyalties.

This novel deals with emotions much more than other FR titles. It might make it slow at times, but I liked the change. The plot is strong and interesting. It hasn't got a lot of twists in it but it isn't boring or predictable at all. The battle scenes are OK, although the book itself is a bit too battle-heavy in my opinion. At least there aren't any random and unnecessary battles in the novel, as there often are in FR books. And I have to mention the ending. It is hard to comment on it without giving away any spoilers, but I will say it is different from cheesy endings you come to expect from Wizards and their books. I liked it a lot.

On the downside, the characters and especially the villains are crude and uninteresting. This is a book with lot of introspective, but I failed to see any distinguishable characteristics on any of the protagonists. The villains, on the other hand, are terrible. It is true they haven't been given a lot of space in this book, but you really got to have more interesting villains. I see some people complaining about pulpy romance in this book, but there isn't a lot of it in the book, and it isn't particularly pulpy.

All in all, a slightly different FR novel with a strong plot and weak characters. Yeah, and a great ending. A good read.
